Gaza is literally sinking in its own sewage waste. The largest sewage pump in Gaza ran out of fuel and thus overflowed into the streets, forcing children to walk through waste just to get to school (Nidal Al-Mughrabi.) The scene looked like a natural disaster had occurred, however this can be attributed to politics as opposed to Nature. Much of the fuel used to sustain these sewage systems was usually smuggled illegally through tunnels between Gaza and Egypt, however since the recent crackdown on these tunnels, Gaza is left without fuel. Of course due to the increasing constrictions on the siege and blockade by Israel and Egypt, Gaza has no where to turn to in order to get fuel and keep these systems working.
Electricity is also dire, leaving Gazans in the dark. On average, people can be without electricity anywhere between 12 and 16 hours a day. In 2012 Ochaopt reported that citizens were without power for 12 hours a day. Most recently in November a power plant was forced to shut down, leaving the 30% of Gaza it supplied without any power for 16 hours a day (Unispal).
